Third-grader Rob and his friend Soup are the source of nonstop mischief. Set in rural Vermont in the 1920's, Soup sets the stage for some funny and poignant episodes for kids growing up - bullies at school, a very proper church matron is put in her place by the two and a local junk dealer catches them trying to cheat him. The old barrel and the chicken coop mishap is a favorite scene. Some things never change and mischief is one of them. Otherwise, it is interesting for young listeners to hear of the differences between today and growing up poor on a Vermont farm.

Life is full of fun and adventure when you have a friend like Soup. This is the first of a series of Peck's autobiographical novels about growing up in Vermont in the 1920s. The young actor, Amon Purinton, gives realistic expression of Robert and Soup's adventurous mischief and feelings. Audiences of all ages will identify with Soup. Adults will feel nostalgic. Young listeners will feel like part of the gang and may seek other titles in the series. C.R.A. (c)AudioFile, Portland, Maine
