Jennifer A. Nielsen, author of the NYT and USA TODAY bestselling Ascendance Trilogy, has woven an electrifying tale of greed and power, magic and destiny, and one boy's courage at the heart of it all.

When Nic, a slave in the mines outside of Rome, is forced to enter a sealed cavern containing the lost treasures of Julius Caesar, he finds much more than gold and gemstones: He discovers an ancient bulla, an amulet that belonged to the great Caesar and is filled with a magic once reserved for the Gods — magic some Romans would kill for. Now, with the deadly power of the bulla pulsing through his veins, Nic is determined to become free. But instead, he finds himself at the center of a ruthless conspiracy to overthrow the emperor and spark the Praetor War, a battle to destroy Rome from within. Traitors and spies lurk at every turn, each more desperate than the next to use Nic's newfound powers for their own dark purposes. In a quest to stop the rebellion, save Rome, and secure his own freedom, Nic must harness the magic within himself and defeat the empire's most powerful and savage leaders.

Gr 5-8-Nicolas Calva is a slave in the mines right outside ancient Rome. One day Nic is ordered by his superior to go down into a cave thought to contain lost treasures belonging to Julius Caesar. As he is contemplating how to avoid his death in the caves, Nic overhears a Roman soldier planning a deadly conspiracy, and although Nic attempts to evade detection, the soldier confronts him. He assigns Nic the task of looking for and recovering an amulet that belonged to Caesar, a bulla. Nic is ambushed by a griffin, a beast of the gods, as he attempts to look for the amulet, which he later learns contains destructive magical powers. His desire to hide the bulla from all Romans, especially the soldier he believes is planning the fall of Rome, generates intrigue and leads to one daring escapade after another. Narrator Macleod Andrews does an excellent job portraying all of the characters, both the major and minor players, and traitors and spies, in this most action-packed, exciting drama. VERDICT Listeners will thoroughly enjoy the fusion of Roman history, fantasy, and fast-paced action.-Sheila Acosta, San Antonio Public Library
