The wealthy Agatha Dawson is dead—a trifle sooner than expected—but there are no apparent signs of foul play. Lord Peter Wimsey, however, senses that something is amiss and refuses to let the case rest—even without any clues or leads. Suddenly, he is faced with another murder: Agatha's maid. Can super-sleuth Wimsey find the murderer and solve the case before he becomes the killer's next victim?

The intricate trail of horror and senseless murder leads from a beautiful Hampshire village to a fashionable London flat and a deliberate test of amour.

In UNNATURAL DEATH, one of the early books in the Lord Peter Whimsey mystery series, Lord Peter investigates what he fears may be the perfect murder. The narrator, Ian Carmichael, gives a superb performance in general, but it takes a few minutes in the beginning to adjust to his accent and fast pace. It's also a puzzle that Carmichael does not differentiate between two main characters, Lord Peter Whimsey and his friend, Inspector Parker from Scotland Yard, when he is quite capable of doing so as he demonstrates with "lower-class" and minor characters of the story, whom he renders in a lively and satisfying manner. The cast of this audio program, featuring the sleuthing talents of British aristocrat Lord Peter Wimsey, revels in Dorothy Sayers's wonderful language. Listeners will find themselves chuckling at the oh-so-upper-crust turns of phrase of Lord Peter and the descriptions of the various Hampshire characters. Miss Climpson is as admirable of enunciation as she is indomitable in her assistance to the investigation. Just one complaint: The amusement is interrupted often by the announcement of the cast and author and title. Perhaps the intent is to mimic a weekly radio show, but, ultimately, the device is distracting. B.H.B. (c) AudioFile 2011, Portland, Maine
